On the night of thursday before Easter, in Verbicaro, Calabria, a region in the South part of Italy, stages "Battienti", an ancient catholic rite.
"Battienti" is the local language word to say hitters. At night the men who partecipate in rite, hit their legs with a piece of cork covered with shards of glass. They walk around the village three times stopping in front of the seven churches, where they are not allowed to enter. There, they start to hit themselves again, leaving an offer of blood on the steps to the churches. Marino family lives in Verbicaro, they follow this tradition since nineteenth century.
